Take Action for Greyhounds

Ban Irish Live Hare Coursing: Petition

The Irish government is sensitive to outside opinion as tourism is one of our most lucrative industries, so messages from abroad can influence the decision.

Dear Friends,

Following the recent historic ban on carted stag hunting in Ireland, campaigners against blood sports are hopeful that the Irish government will follow up this achievement by banning the horrific practise of live hare coursing, in which hares are used as live bait in contests between competing greyhounds.

Here is a link to a film of what hare coursing in Ireland involves:

Thousands of hares are captured annually in Ireland for this "pastime".to be chased and terrorised in wired enclosures for "fun" and "entertainment". Many are mauled to death; others die of stress-related ailments or internal injuries after being released back into the wild following the coursing events.

Other hares, mainly the ones deemed unsuitable for coursing, are used to "blood" dogs as part of their training. This involves feeding them live to greyhounds. The greyhounds also suffer injury, ill-treatment, and neglect in coursing.

A decision will be made by the Irish government shortly (at some point before the end of August) on whether to permit yet another season of this barbaric blood sport. The hare-coursing season itself, if allowed to go ahead, would begin in the final week of September.

Can you congratulate Ireland's Environment Minister John Gormley on his achievement in banning carted stag hunting.a brief message will suffice. And ask him to now consider banning live hare coursing in Ireland?

You can contact him at: minister@environ.ie

Thanking you,

John Fitzgerald,

PS. It would of course be most helpful if you could pass this appeal to another group or campaigner. Thank you!

Stop Greyhound Doping in Alabama: Contact Governor

Greyhound tests positive at Birmingham – contact Governor Riley now!

*Please forward and crosspost*

Reporting on information provided by GREY2K USA, the Birmingham News today reports that a trainer has been fined for injecting one of his dogs with cocaine.

Last week, we wrote to the Governor’s Task Force with information about two racing greyhounds testing cocaine positive. We asked that the Task Force launch a formal investigation into the following incidents:

On or about December 23, 2009 a greyhound named Kiowa Fly Lucia tested positive for cocaine at Mobile County Greyhound Park.

On or about November 11, 2009 a greyhound under the control of an individual named Robert E. Trow tested positive for cocaine at the Birmingham Racecourse.

Please read the story, post comments on the online blog and then please join us in contacting Governor Riley. Tell him that dog racing is cruel and inhumane and must end.

It is important that we speak for the gentle dogs, who suffer in so many ways because of the cruelty of dog racing.

Subject: Food crisis at Scooby Medina!

Dogs Cannot Live By Bread Alone!

Dear GRIN Friends, we reach out to you today to ask that you read this plea below from the Scooby Medina Shelter.

GRIN founder Abby Christman and Veterinarian friend Jason Cordeiro will be going to Scooby at the end of April, and it would be awesome to take the shelter a sizable donation from their GRIN friends and supporters in the U.S. We hope that there will be a way to resolve this huge problem in the near future, but for now, the dogs need to eat. You can donate through GRIN at www.galgorescue.org alternatively, you can donate directly through the Scooby website at www.scoobymedina.org. Thank you, and we will keep you informed about the situation when the GRIN volunteers return.

Best regards,

Chris

FOOD CRISIS AT SCOOBY - PLEASE HELP!

Dear Friends,

We are reaching out to you at a very critical time at our shelter. The dogs desperately need our help at this time. We are very close to disastrous food crisis for the dogs.

The dogs at Scooby are fed a diet of raw chicken, ground up and mixed with bread and also dry dog food on days when we don't have chicken. We get the chicken for free but there is now a new law that is being passed in Spain that all chicken carcasses must be destroyed and cannot be used by anyone. This is a huge waste and also a very big problem for Scooby, because this was our source of free food at the shelter since the beginning.

As you can imagine, feeding over 300 dogs on a daily basis is a lot food. There is no possible way that we can afford to purchase dog food for this many animals.

At this time, we are asking for you help of donations to buy food so we can feed the dogs that are currently at the shelter. Of course donations of dog food are accepted as well.

Sadly, the reality is, if we cannot feed the animals, we can't operate, and if we can't operate, we cannot continue to do the work that we have been doing. Even worse, we will have euthanize dogs that have simply no chance for adoption as we won't be able to afford to maintain such large numbers at the shelter.

Your support, no matter how big or small can literally save a life in this situation. We are looking into several options to this situation to see if we purchase the carcasses for a discounted price and other alternatives. But as you know, these things take time and this moment, we don't have the time.

The dogs need to eat. We need you. Please help us during this difficult time.

Thank you.

Justice Needed in Greyhound/ Multi-Breed Raid

Call for letters before April 22

Read original article and view video.

I am asking for help. On April 8th, Lisa, Jim and John Wilson pleaded not guilty in court and their lawyer got a postponement until April 22nd. The dogs that were removed from Lisa's "care" were in horrible shape. Some of them had to be put down. To the best of my knowledge, 3 of the 10 greyhounds are gone and some of the other breeds, but I don't know how many. This is not the first time Lisa has been in trouble with the humane society. But nothing substantial was ever done to correct the situation at Lisa's home. They never followed up on her, so she continued on with business as usual. Henry County now has a new executive director at the humane society and that is really what precipitated all of this, thankfully, for the dogs. Unfortunately it was too late for some of the dogs and who knows how many other dogs in the past.

Justice for the Animals

This is where the help part comes in. In Ohio, animal cruelty is only a misdemeanor. That means the maximum sentence could be a fine and some jail time. These people rarely get jail time and usually get away with a small fine and a suspended sentence. Basically just a slap on the wrist and a stern talking to. I am asking for people to write the prosecutor and ask him to go for the maximum fine and the maximum jail sentence possible, with no suspension of jail time. Also ask him to have the Wilsons ordered to never own animals again. This is a way for everyone to speak for the dogs that didn't stand a chance at Lisa's house, past, present and heaven forbid the future. I for one, will never forget the face of the greyhound that I got away from Lisa four years ago. I think about him often and what he suffered at her hands.

Please feel free to cross post and forward this to all who may help. You can write a letter whether or not you live in Ohio. The more letters the bigger the impression. I know some of you have personal experiences with dogs from Lisa's care as I do. You can include that in the letter. Thank you!

**URGENT** - Calls Needed to Help Alabama Greyhounds! November 2 Vote

The greyhounds in Alabama need your help today! SHARE TO ALL CROSSLISTS

April 1, 2010: Last night, the state Senate collected the 21 votes needed to pass a proposed constitutional amendment that will allow the expansion of gambling throughout the state.

The measure must be approved by the House and then Alabama voters in a referendum on November 2 before it can take effect. If passed, it will legalize the electronic bingo machines already at VictoryLand (Macon County Greyhound Park) and allow the installation of the machines at Birmingham Race Course and Mobile Greyhound Park. These machines will prop up the cruelty of dog racing, removing it from both market pressures and the advocacy of greyhound friends like you.

Please call your Representative in the State House today, and ask them to you oppose this bill because you do not want the state to prop up the cruelty of dog racing. If you receive any feedback from your lawmakers, please forward it to GREY2K USA board member, Jennifer Krebs.

The greyhounds can’t speak for themselves and are counting on us to be their voice!

Stop Cruelty to Spanish Greyhounds (GALGOS)- February, 2010

Please add your signature to this Petition, before 30th April, 2010, so that we can show how widespread is European public concern. The Treaties that form the European Community do not currently cover animal welfare so European-wide legislation is not possible and only the Spanish government can legislate to end the barbaric treatment of greyhounds in Spain. It is especially important to bring this terrible cruelty to the fore at this time when Spain holds the Presidency of the European Union.

End Hare Coursing in Ireland- February, 2010

The majority of Irish people oppose Hare Coursing. Muzzling introduced in 1993 did not stop hares being battered and mauled by the muzzled dogs . Greyhounds are big strong dogs and hares sustain internal injuries by being tossed around by frustrated dogs who cannot do what comes instinctivly. Many will sustain injuries so severe that they will die on the coursing field, the dogs also sustain injuries in the chase. Gentle wild Hares running for their lives to entertain those who are lacking empathy is wrong. Please sign now and let the Irish Government know that it is now time to END live hare coursing.

Greyhound Racing in Phillipines (See Results)

There has a been a renewed effort by the Department of Trade and Industry to investigate the possible legalisation of greyhound racing . This petition is to urge the South African Government to keep the ban in place. The legalisation of dog racing will result in suffering, unspeakable living conditions and often untimely and brutal death for thousands of greyhounds that dont make the grade or become too old to race, further adding to the burden of animal welfare organisations that are already overwhelmed caring for animals in disadvantaged communities. These dogs will only be seen as expendable commodities to a large part of the population that is already in financial difficulties, families have already been torn apart by gambling, and will be encouraged by the idea that they will profit from breeding and racing greyhounds, adding to an already overburdened welfare department. Dog racing is made out to be a growing and prosperous industry overseas but there is evidence that dog racing is struggling to survive in developed countries, even though it has been a part of their society for many years, and even these countries cannot guarantee homes for retired dogs. Considering this and the added burden that would be put on animal welfare organisations, the money that would be needed from the Government to cope with this added burden, it is inexplicable how they can even consider legalising greyhound racing.
