PRESS ADVISORY FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: RE: GREYHOUND PLANET DAY, SEPTEMBER 19, 2004 PRESS CONTACT: LOUISE COLEMAN, 508-435-5969, 617-817-6706; e-mail: greyhndfds@aol.com; website: www.ameurogreyhoundalliance.org LOCAL PRESS CONTACT: PLACE: TIME: LOCAL EVENT DESCRIPTION: Greyhound Planet Day will be celebrated internationally September 19, 2004. This commemoration began as the idea of a Kansas City greyhound adopter and advocate, Therese Skinner. The idea found a home at the American-European Greyhound Alliance's website - www.ameurogreyhoundalliance.org. The international reach of the Internet is making this observance of the greyhound dynamic, wide ranging, and inclusive - connecting many, many people and their greyhounds - all gathering on 9/19 to express their love and admiration for greyhounds, and their cousins, the Spanish galgo and the lurcher. The greyhound adoption movement in the United States has burgeoned in the last decade. Greyhound adoption groups are well established in Britain and are taking hold in Australia, Ireland, Norway and Spain. Greyhound Planet Day is being celebrated by greyhound advocates sponsoring events across the U.S. and internationally. Greyhound Planet Day is being assisted by PETCO stores throughout the United States. On the East Coast PETCO is selling greyhound pins and then will distribute the money raised to local adoption groups. PETCO stores in other parts of the country will donate monies brought in by doing 'round-ups' at their cash registers on September 13 through 19. The amount of each sale will be rounded - up to the nearest dollar amount and the proceeds will go to local greyhound adoption groups. In the past two years PETCO and their shoppers have raised $125,291 for the greyhounds. PETCO is actively supportive of greyhound adoption efforts. Greyhound Planet Day celebrations will be observed throughout the U.S., Canada, Britain, Ireland, Norway, and Australia.
