Marion Fitzgibbon
Marion Fitzgibbon at the podium - Dewey Beach 2001

Marion Fitzgibbon, President Irish SPCA, Irish Trustee for Pro Animale and co-founder of the American-European Greyhound Alliance was the keynote speaker at the Dewey Beach brunch. Dewey Beach has become a central, annual reunion event for Greyhound lovers. Marion spoke about the suffering of the Irish racing Greyhound both in Ireland and Spain. Her experience in this difficult situation has been immediate and anguishing.

During her talk, Marion stressed the need to implement existing EU transport regulations and to extend them to cover the cage size Greyhounds must have and the need for a
journey plan. For years Irish Greyhounds have traved four to five days in grossly inadequate transport lorries without being fed, watered or let out of their small cages. Then they get to Spain and the suffering worsens. The conditions for Greyhounds will improve only when they are seen as companion animals and are accorded the protections given to dogs in this category. As it is they are dealt with as cargo - units - not as individuals - not as sentient beings.

Marion asked the brunch attendees to keep the pressure on the officials at the Irish Deptartment of Agriculture and on the Spainish authorities. Marion's talk will be included - in a shortened form - in the upcoming Celebrating Greyhounds magazine.

The Brunch crowd heartily applauds at the end of Marion's speech.
