Hello from the Cybercafe in Dublin -

Tomorrow the International Greyhound Welfare Forum meets. The Forum used to
meet in London on an alternate basis with Dublin but since the Irish greyhound welfare situation is more urgent the meeting is continuing to be based in Dublin.

Representatives come from the major humane societies in Britain, Scotland,
and sometimes Wales, and Spain. Tomorrow I plan to update the Forum on the
U.S. greyhound community's progress and problems as best I can.

Another topic - Marion Fitzgibbon and I are working on trying to form a real adoption program in Dublin. Greyhounds are not finding homes in Ireland in any appreciable numbers. They are almost certain to be put down in the pounds. It works to have a few Irish greyhounds go to other countries as representatives of those left behind but the effort to send large numbers of Irish hounds to countries
already overwhelmed with greyhounds seems short sighted at best. The
greyhound's image in Ireland has to be radically improved if any meaningful
change is to be made here for the better.

John Mottern, a talented photojournalist, who has long helped the greyhounds is going to be at the Forum meeting and then will go with Marion and I to the Avalon Sanctuary for greyhounds on the West coast of Ireland. John's photos from his two trips to Spain were exceptional and most useful in documenting the sad situation for greyhounds and galgos there. These photos were included in the "All Bets Are Off" book that Greyhound Friends of N.C. published on the plight of the dogs in Spain. [see link at left to order] I am hoping the Irish photos will have the same sort of reach.

Last evening I gave a presentation - as did other Forum members - at a program at University College Dublin. It was organized by the student animal welfare organization. The info was well received. Two greyhounds attended. These were the only greyhounds the students had ever seen outside the racing scene. The dogs
were friendly and made a really good impression.
