16 - 23 September 2007
Greyhound Planet is a time chosen each year to honor the Greyhound and its relatives (Galgos, lurchers, etc.) throughout the world. The purpose of this international event is to raise the public's awareness of the wonder and magic of Greyhounds as pets, educate others on the current status of Greyhounds around the world and to honor those Greyhounds who have left us already. The American-European Greyhound Alliance is serving as an information source for individual groups around the world as they plan their Greyhound awareness events. Please join your local group in celebration and remembrance of our wonderful hounds on Greyhound Planet's fourth annual event, September 16 - 23, 2007.
Information on groups sponsoring events will be posted here as those plans are sent to us so send us your announcements once your plans are finalized!
Groups Hosting Greyhound Planet Events
This year please join hundreds of Greyhound groups all over the world along with PETCO, the PETCO Foundation and The American-European Greyhound Alliance in celebration of GREYHOUND PLANET WEEK! Your group is encouraged and welcome to participate during the September 16th – 23rd, 2007 event!
Greyhound Planet Week is a time chosen each year to honor the Greyhound and its relatives including Galgos, Lurchers, etc… throughout the world. The purpose of this international event is to raise the public's awareness of the wonder and magic of Greyhounds as pets, educate others on the current status of Greyhounds around the world and to honor those Greyhounds that have touched our lives and sadly left us.
The American-European Greyhound Alliance is serving as an information source for individual groups around the world as they plan their Greyhound awareness events. Please join your local group in celebration and remembrance of our wonderful hounds on Greyhound Planet Week's sixth annual event, September 16th – 23rd, 2007.
This event has grown so large from the first year in 2002 that we had to expand it. It started out with a one day celebration, and now its been expanded to eight days all over the world! It is the only breed specific event that PETCO and the PETCO Foundation support through an in-store fundraiser in all PETCO stores nationwide to help Greyhound adoption groups in the United States. Hundreds of thousands of dollars are raised each year to benefit Greyhound adoption groups through PETCO and the PETCO Foundation's GREYHOUND PLANET WEEK fundraiser.
If your group is not a Charitable Partner of the PETCO Foundation, please visit www.petco.com and click on the PETCO Foundation. This will explain the procedures for becoming a Charitable Partner of the Foundation and becoming eligible to be selected by a PETCO store to be a recipient of Greyhound Planet Week donations.
If you have not established a partnership with a PETCO store to host adoptions and/or “meet and greet” information events, please stop by your local PETCO store and speak to the general manager for more details. You may also contact Susan Rosenberg, PETCO Foundation National Adoptions Coordinator, at 858-453-7845 ext. 3348 or susanr@petco.com for more information.
If you don't have a PETCO store near you, don't despair! You can still join in on the celebration by holding an event of your own between, September 16 - 23. Our GREYHOUND PLANET team will request national and international media coverage but LOCAL media coverage will be up to your group to request.
Gathering in large numbers in public is the best way to get everyone's attention so let's all join together this year and celebrate the most wonderful, incredible companions on earth - the Greyhounds!
Information about scheduled events will be posted on this site as those plans are sent to us by Greyhound groups. So send us your announcements once your plans are finalized!
2004 PETCO Press Release on Greyhound Planet Week ......
Greyhound Planet Week to Provide Off-track Support for Retired Racers
Saturday September 11, 9:00 am ET
PETCO and PETCO Foundation Fundraiser Will Aid Greyhound Rescue
SAN DIEGO, Sept. 11 /PRNewswire/ -- With thousands of Greyhounds
euthanized each year because they are no longer needed at the racetrack,
PETCO Animal Supplies, Inc. and the PETCO Foundation hope to raise
awareness as well as funds for these beautiful and loving creatures
during their Greyhound Planet Weekend.
September 13 through September 19, [2004] PETCO will celebrate Greyhound Planet
Week by asking their customers to round up purchases to the nearest
dollar, with all proceeds going to the PETCO Foundation. The Foundation
will then distribute those monies raised to greyhound rescue groups in
PETCO store communities across the country. This effort started two
years ago in conjunction with the first Greyhound Planet Day, raising
more than $125,000 since inception for greyhound-focused organizations.
"It is a horrible tragedy that so many of these wonderful animals are
destroyed every year, simply because the dog racing industry has
determined they are no longer viable," PETCO Foundation Director Paul
Jolly said. "Fortunately, there are a number of greyhound rescue groups
across the country, and caring customers at PETCO, to help save these
dogs and join them with caring families."
Greyhound adoptions account for almost 20% of all dog adoptions at PETCO
stores, with more groups signing up to hold adoption events at PETCO
stores each year. This fundraiser will help those many groups with the
necessary resources they need to rescue even more of these animals from
an early grave. PETCO customers who donate $10 or more will receive a
commemorative Greyhound lapel pin to help them celebrate this royal
breed.
"Greyhounds were a favorite of the Egyptian elite, and were mentioned in
the Old Testament and Homer's Odyssey," Jolly added. "These are amazing
creatures capable of tremendous speed and power, yet they have such
gentle, loving natures."
