31 December 2004 update on Angel's recovery

Cruelty to animals in Limerick has reached unacceptable proportions.  The Halloween period had been a nightmare.

The violence and cruelty to animals on the streets has continued unabated over the past six weeks.  Our members are no longer safe in certain areas of the city.  We have been attacked in broad daylight at 4.30 in the afternoon.  We have witnessed the most senseless acts of cruelty being perpetrated on unfortunate dogs, cats and horses.

However, we now feel we have to speak out strongly as to-day we experienced the most horrific case of mindless barbaric cruelty.  We responded to a call from a member of the public telling us that a dog was lying on the street in terrible condition.  On arrival at the scene our volunteers found a poor lurcher in an awful state.  This poor animal was totally emaciated and hairless and was being tortured by a gang of young boys, average age probably eleven or twelve years old.  They were pushing nails into her stomach and trying to choke her.  They were laughing and boasting that they would finish her off with a brick to the head.  They said that they had already killed her pups.  Unbelievable as it might seem this poor dog had recently given birth.  We called this lurcher Angel and she is fighting for her life to-night. (Pictures below - Warning! HOW MUCH MORE CRUELTY CAN THE ABANDONED ANIMALS OF  LIMERICK  BE  EXPECTED TO ENDURE ?

Limerick Animal Welfare cannot begin to build the much needed Animal Sanctuary at Kilfinane because of lack of funds.   Our bills for the month of October amounted to 27,500 euro as a result of the huge number of accident and emergency cases  we had to cater for due to the fireworks and bangers.

WE URGENTLY NEED DONATIONS TO HELP WITH OUR VETERINARY BILLS.  AT PRESENT WE OWE THE VETS APPROXIMATELY 10,000 EURO.  WE CANNOT CONTINUE  WITHOUT YOUR HELP.  DONATIONS WILL BE GRATEFULLY RECEIVED AT OUR CHARITY SHOP, 12 B UPPER CECIL STREET, LIMERICK.  YOU CAN ALSO DONATE ON LINE.    www.limerickanimalwelfare.com

16 November Update.......

Hi Nancy,

I am so grateful for all the donations and good wishes for Angel. Louise is sending me a cheque. Angel is improving each day but unfortunately she now has a womb infection due to the fact that she recently had puppies. She also has an injured hip but we cannot xray yet as she is not well enough. She skin is improving slowly and the itching is less and less each day. She now has a blanket and loves her comfort. Again many thanks to everyone.

Best wishes,

Marion.

Youths pound nails into dog’s stomach
By Jimmy Woulfe

CHILDREN as young as 10 are believed to be responsible for one of the worst cases of animal abuse discovered in Limerick.

A group of about 12 children were discovered pounding nails into the stomach of a 10-month old female lurcher, a type of dog that usually has a greyhound as one of its parents.

Niamh Allen, a member of Limerick Animal Welfare who came upon the attack in Southill, believes it was the intention of the gang to kill the dog.

“This is the worst we have ever seen. The dog was shaking with pain when we got there. They had driven nails into her back and stomach. She was too weak to defend herself from these people.

“They were literally pounding nails into her when we arrived,” she said.

One of the gang, who were as young as 10, said they intended to get a brick to kill the animal. Some of those involved told Animal Welfare workers they had killed pups they found with the lurcher.

The dog, which the welfare workers have named Angel, had been subjected to long-term abuse.

“We do not know what colour she was as she lost all her coat from mange, abuse and neglect.

“I have been at this for 30 years, but I have never seen anything like this.

“It is so sad and distressing,” said chairperson of Limerick Animal Welfare Marion Fitzgibbon.

Only last week Ms Fitzgibbon warned that acts of cruelty against animals in Limerick were escalating, often as the result of drugs.

She said the organisation, which covers the city, county and parts of Clare, is forced to pay out over €3,000 each week on veterinary, kennel and care bills for dogs they have rescued.

“We had to pay out €27,500 in October because of the huge number of incidents of animals being terrorised by having bangers tied to their legs.

“Many animals also suffered burn injuries.”

She said children as young as eight were inflicting horrendous torture on animals using knives and other implements.

Ms Fitzgibbon said she would not report the incident to gardaí as the youths were too young to be dealt with under law.

More information from Marion about children and the cruelty laws of Ireland.......

Hi Everyone,

Sorry that I caused so much upset by my statement.  I will try and explain the situation in our city and in Ireland in general. First of all Animal Welfare has very low priority in Ireland.  My friend Johanna Wothke from Pro Animale says that Ireland is a Third World country for animals.  She has worked all over Europe and Eastern countries and she lists Ireland after Turkey and on a par with Spain.

The Animals Welfare Laws in Ireland are in urgent need of updating.   We still labour under the 1911 Victorian Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Acts.  We have had some Amendments over the years but we still must prosecute under Section 1 of 1911 if my memory serves me correctly.  This is the only Statute in Irish Law that has not been updated.  The British Government have recently drawn up a new Prevention of Cruelty Act for the British Isles.

The children we meet in the street come from broken families and many are sleeping rough and do not attend any school.  Their parents or guardians ( if they have any) are mostly addicted to drink and drugs and many are involved in selling drugs..

There are about five deprived areas in the city and approximately 95% of the parents are unemployed.  Most of these areas are not safe and outsiders are not welcome.  The local police do not go in there unless there is a serious disturbance.  This would involve humans not animals and would have to be a stabbing  or shooting incident.  They do not involve themselves in petty crime as they say that they do not have sufficient resources or staff.

These children would be cautioned if they were caught but they would be released as there are not enough juvenile detention places in Ireland to accommodate all the young offenders.  They usually do not get detained until they get involved in robbery with violence or some similar "serious" offence.  All these children wear sweat shirts with hoods up and they are known locally as "hoodies"  These hoods shade their faces and make it difficult to identify them even with security cameras.  They usually sit of walls and have look outs posted and they are gone into the housing estates or graveyards as soon as the police cars approach.  Many of them carry flick knives and these are concealed in their sleeves.  They are very fast and you do not realise that you have been stabbed until you see the blood.  They all steal to feed their drug habits and the young children are trained as "look-outs" and get money from the older boys.  It is a terrible circle of deprivation and crime.

In the last week we have had many awful experiences.  To-night, Saturday, Niamh and two courageous volunteers went into Moyross to try and rescue a dying Swan.  We have had reports of Swans being shot every evening. Teenagers with guns are using them as targets and shooting them from a bridge known as "the iron bridge".  Wild ducks are also targets.  We needed proof of this for the police as it is illegal to shoot a Swan and nobody believed us that this was happening.  To-night we got our proof.  We now have a beautiful dead Swan killed by gun shot pellets.  It is a terrible sight and I will not upset you by sending the photos.  Our volunteers had to go up the railway line and down to the river bank and swamp land in the dark to retrieve this unfortunate bird.  As you all know Swans mate for life the it the saddest thing to see the faithful companion waiting beside the dead partner.

The kids in these areas grow up and live with violence every day of their lives.  They see and experience abuse in their families very often.  We have been shot at on the streets and observed that the children near by do not even stop playing.  They learn to mind their own business and never talk about what they see. The concerned people who live in these areas live in fear and if they say anything their cars and houses may be burned and their windows can be "put in". We have been stoned in broad daylight and our jeep badly damaged and I have been attacked and even urinated on.  Many of these kids also live in fear and are drawn into gangs and do not want to participate but are bullied and do not want to be called "chicken".

We hope in the future to try and operate a mobile service that would visit these areas a couple of times a month.  We would have a volunteer and Veterinary Nurse and hope to become accepted and well known in the areas.  We would hope to treat mange infestation and worm and flea infestation and be given the dogs and cats that are not being cared for.  We would also start a neutering programme and try and cut down on the numbers of unwanted animals being born.  We also have a huge job to do for the ill-treated horses and this needs huge resources.

To operate a service like this we first need to have our Sanctuary base established to work out of.  We have to be able to offer shelter to these unfortunate animals. At present we can only do our best with the limited resources and volunteers available.  A long term approach is needed to try and address the problems and raise the Animal Welfare Profile in the city.

Many thanks for your concern and your support.  It is much appreciated.

Marion FitzGibbon.

Hi Louise,

I spoke to the Sergeant in charge of our local Garda Station this morning. He confirmed that the situation is almost impossible. The kids can be cautioned but it must be in the Garda Station and in the presence of their parents or guardians. This is not usually possible as the parents are not interested if they can be reached. The age for prosecution in the Adult Court System is eighteen. The children are dealt with in the juvenile court and given several chances before they are sent to juvenile detention centres. We do not have enough places for the many children needing detention. If a child is out of control and the parents cannot cope it is sometimes quite difficult to find a suitable for such a child. They often end up in bed and breakfast type of accommodation with a social worker trying to keep in touch. Many of these children get lost in the system. It is a break-down in the entire social order. I guess we all need to be social workers as well as animal welfare devotees.

I hope all the new arrivals are doing well.

Many thanks,

Marion.

31 December 2004 update on Angel's recovery......

Hi Nancy,

Angel is doing very well and is almost completely recovered. We have not done anything about her leg as it is getting stronger. It is an old injury to the hock and the Vet will look at it again next month. I think she will stay in her foster home as Lindsay and Steve are now very attached to her. We are very grateful for the support.

We rescued six nine week old lurcher puppies from the gypsies to-day. They are beautiful. One is blue with white markings and the other five are black. They are really precious.

Happy New year to all.

Marion.
