Conditions of the Racing Greyhounds in Spain....

Everyone,
I am pleased to have received this message from Felip Puig i Godes. It is the first indication I have received that an investigation was performed.
 
The dogs racing at Meridiana in Barcelona are kenneled at Santa Coloma, some distance away. They live there until they are trucked to the track to race. It is correct that then they return to the "stable". The investigation revealed violations at Santa Coloma that must be corrected or fines will be levied. The concern is that it will be cheaper to pay the fines and leave the conditions deplorable.
 
The major victory here was that it was found the crates or kennels each dog is kept in is not adequate in size. To correct this violation they must be made larger, which is going to be expensive. I don't know from his message if there was an on sight investigation at the track itself, but I haven't heard it was. He is correct, the dogs return after the race to Santa Coloma. What he might not know is that the truck trailers where they are kept at the track do not have enough for the dogs, and there is not proper ventilation. I believe that the dogs might be staying in those trailers all day until the entire load of dogs for that day returns to Santa Coloma.
 
I think it is time to find out what improvements have been started at the kennels, and just what was specifically done at the track itself. And, we need to explain to him how the dogs spend all that time in the trailers. The concern that fines will be paid and no improvements made, that is a big point. I know this is a lot to digest. But, I am sure that if you wrote a letter or e-mail you want to know about this response. Hopefully you might get one of your own.

Al seu correu electrònic ens manifesta la seva preocupació sobre la situació dels llebrers a Catalunya.
 
Us vull comunicar que a Catalunya l'únic lloc on es fan curses de llebrers és al Canódrom Meridiana de Barcelona on els gossos romanen el temps mínim per a cada cursa, un cop finalitzada, els animals són transportats a unes quadres, on diferents particulars tenen de forma permanent llebrers per a les competicions.
 
Des del Departament s'està fent un seguiment de la situació i condicions dels animals, havent trobat algunes deficiències i aspectes a millorar. Des de la gerència del Canòdrom hi ha una aparent disposició per solucionar les deficiències trobades, malgrat això, el nostre compromís és continuar fent un seguiment acurat de la situació per, en cas necessari, establir els mecanismes legals necessaris per garantir el benestar dels llebrers.
 
Tingueu a ben segur, que des del Departament de Medi Ambient treballem perquè a Catalunya es compleixi de forma escrupulosa la normativa de protecció dels animals i per fomentar les actituds cíviques i responsables en relació amb els animals.

Your e-mail brings to our attention your concern regarding the status of greyhounds in Catalonia.
 
I would like you to know that the only place in Catalonia where greyhounds are run is at Barcelona's Meridiana dog racing track, where dogs remain the minimum time necessary for each race. Once the racing has finished, the animals are taken to stables where different private owners keep greyhounds for competition.
 
This Department is following up the status and conditions of these animals, as we have found certain deficiencies and aspects that could be improved. The race track managers seem disposed to redress the deficiencies found; nonetheless, our commitment is to continue to monitor the situation closely in order, if necessary, to set in motion the necessary legal mechanisms to guarantee the welfare of the greyhounds.
 
Please rest assured that here at the Department of the Environment we are working to make sure Catalonia complies scrupulously with standards on animal rights, and promotes civic, responsible attitudes towards animals.

Estimados Srs.
Respetuosamente, le envío este mensaje a cada uno de ustedes como personas implicadas en el bienestar animal de algún modo u otro. Quiero expresarles mi preocupación y disgusto respecto a las condiciones denunciadas en relación a los Galgos irlandeses que corren en el
canódromo Meridiana en Barcelona, así como el abandono y eliminación mediante ahorcamiento de los galgos de caza en España. Durante dos años he seguido estos tristes hechos, y durante este tiempo, he trabajado y he intentado apoyar a gente de su país que desean mejorar las condiciones de estos animales. He elegido enfocarme primero en las
condiciones del canódromo Meridiana. Les ruego a cada uno de ustedes que sus normas y
regulaciones que muestran claramente que las condiciones que sufren los perros que viven y corren en Meridiana no son controladas por sus autoridades. Esto se traduce en sufrimiento, lesiones y muerte para muchos de estos perros. Tengo una copia de sus legislaciones que están en Español. Todo el conjunto ocupa 25 páginas. Les imploro encarecidamente a que encuentren algo en este grupo de palabras que pueda ayudar a los perros. He tenido un poco de ayuda para concretar algunas preocupaciones y un amigo que las ha traducido.
 
Aquí están:
1. Falta de Supervisión Veterinaria en el núcleo Zoológico.
2. Falta de planes de vacunación.
3. Falta de planes de desparasitación.
4. Falta de planes de desratización.
5. Dimensiones de las jaulas insuficientes.
6. En algunos casos más de un perro por jaula.
7. En el mejor de los casos 1 hora al día fuera de sus habitáculos.
8. No disponen de agua en las jaulas.
9. No hay zona de cuarentena para los galgos recién llegados de Irlanda.
10. El transporte desde Irlanda carece de guía de paradas y documentación necesaria para la importación de animales.
11. El núcleo carece de áreas de paseo inadecuadas.
12. La mayoría de galgos de carreras corren lesionados.
13. No existe supervisión veterinaria en el canódromo para controlar estos galgos.
14. Normalmente los galgos participan muy seguido ( 2 ó 3 carreras semanales ).
15. Los galgos que participan en las carreras son cargados en el camión de transporte con muchísima antelación al desarrollo de la carrera.
16. No hay control antidóping.
17. No hay asistencia veterinaria en el canódromo.
18. La vida deportiva de los galgos es muy corta en comparación a la de otros países debido a la falta de conocimiento y aptitud de los entrenadores.
 
Les ruego una respuesta a mis preocupaciones. Soy una entre cientos de defensores de los animales tanto americanos como europeos que vamos a trabajar para que estos hechos circulen por el mundo. Creemos que pedirles una investigación inmediata en el canódromo de Meridiana es necesario. Creo que esto no sólo beneficiará a los galgos sino que será lo mejor para que el publico internacional tenga la confianza de que no existen abusos y sufrimiento de los animales dentro de las paredes donde se alojan y corren estos perros.
 
En referencia a los ahorcamientos de galgos y otras atrocidades cometidas contra ellos, nos dirigiremos a este respecto también a las autoridades correspondientes. Les mantendremos informados a cada uno de ustedes.
 
Tengo un muy profundo conocimiento del galgo, pues llevo nueve años encontrando hogares para galgos americanos retirados de las carreras. Conozco bien su naturaleza y sensibilidad y lo fácilmente que pueden sufrir lesiones y dolor. Si van a correr en Barcelona, las leyes que lo regulen han de ser cumplidas. El sufrimiento animal a manos de personas no debe ser tolerado, estoy convencida que estarán de acuerdo conmigo. Espero que todos ustedes consideren ayudar en la medida de sus posibilidades y espero ansiosamente sus respuestas.

I respectfully address this message to each of you as a person involved with animal welfare in some capacity. I am contacting you to express my concern and dismay with the present conditions reported with regard to Irish greyhounds racing at the Meridiana Track in Barcelona, as well as the neglect and destruction by hanging of the hunting galgos of Spain. For two years I have followed this unfortunate issue, and for two years I have worked and tried to support those in your country who want to see the conditions improved.
 
I choose to address the Meridiana track conditions first. I appeal to each of you to research your rules and regulations that clearly show the conditions suffered by the dogs who live and race at Meridiana are not being enforced by your authorities. This means suffering, injury and death for many of these dogs. I have a copy of the regulations which are in Spanish. The complete set is 25 pages long. I implore you to find something in this mass of words that will help these dogs. I have had a little help to set out some concerns and a friend to translate.

Here it is:
1. Falta de Supervisión Veterinaria en el nucleo Zoologico.
Lack of veterinary supervision.
2. Falta de planes de vacunación.
Lack of vaccination scheme.

9. No hay zona de cuarentena para los galgos recién llegados de Irlanda.

The transport from Ireland lacks a guide to routine stops and necessary documentation for the importing of animals.
11. El nucleo adolece de areas de paseo adecuadas.
The kennel facility does not dispose of adequate walking areas.
12. La mayoria de galgos partcipantes en las carreras corren lesionados.
Most of the greyhounds race while injured.
13. No existe la supervisión veterinaria en el canódromo para controlar estos galgos.
There is no veterinary supervision at the racetrack to control these greyhounds.
14. Normalmente los galgos participan muy seguido ( 2 ó 3 carreras semanales ).
Normally greyhounds are raced too often ( two to three races per week ).
15. Los galgos que participan en le reunión son cargados al camión de transporte con muchísima antelación al desarrollo de la carrera.
Greyhounds are gathered together waiting far too long in the truck before a race.
16. No hay control antidóping.
There is no testing for drugs.
17. No hay asisténcia veterinaria en el canódromo.
There is no veterinary assistance at the racetrack.
18. La vida deportiva de los galgos es muy corta en comparación a la de otros paises debido a la falta de conocimiento y aptitud de los entrenadores.
The greyhounds' racing life is very short compared to that of those in other countries. This is due to lack of information and aptitudes of the trainers.
 
I would appreciate a reply to my concerns. I am one of hundreds of American and European animal advocates who are going to work to get these issues circulated around the world. We feel that asking you to make an immediate investigation of the Meridiana race track is in order. I believe that not only will it benefit the greyhounds, it will be best
for the international public to have confidence that animal abuse and suffering is not taking place inside the walls where the dogs are kept and then raced.
 
With regard to the hanging of galgos and other atrocities committed against them, this issue will addressed also with the proper authorities. It will also be revisited with each of you.
I have a very deep understanding of the greyhound, as I have been finding homes for retired American racing greyhounds for nine years. I know well their nature and sensitivity and how easily they can be injured and suffer pain. If they are going to race in Barcelona, the laws governing them should be enforced. Animal suffering at the hands of humans is not to be tolerated, I am sure you agree. I am looking to all of you to consider helping in any way you can and look forward to your replies.
