Spanish Dogs Mutilated

The Netherlands

England

PRESS RELEASE
Barcelona, 24 April 2002

Yesterday the Spanish Government used its majority at the Spanish Congress to keep Spain in the stone age in animal welfare by rejecting four proposals to reform the Spanish Penal Code presented by four different political parties, which were awaiting for the last few months to be debated.

It seems that the influence of the hunting and bullfighting industry is still too strong even though some of the proposals only referred to define cruelty to companion animals to be considered a crime and not just a fault with ridiculous and ineffective fines as the only dissuasive tool. For now animals in Spain will continue to be mutilated, tortured and killed with impunity; greyhounds will continue to be hanged as a Spanish 'cultural tradition' in several parts of the country, dog fighting organizations will continue to make good business with impunity, and domestic violence perpetrators will continue abusing family pets with impunity as a warning to other weaker victims.

We know that Spain will eventually consider animals as living beings, with capacity to feel and suffer but we would like you to help us save as many animals as possible the unnecessary suffering they will endure until Spanish representatives understand that violence is violence and that you can't expect new generations to respect their relatives and neighbours if you justify some kinds of violence.

Please send a letter to Spanish authorities for them to understand why every civilized country considers cruelty to animals a crime, and also send letters to the Spanish embassy in you country and to all the media who can spread the word to make Spanish authorities see that you are either part of the solution or part of the problem.

Thank you.
