Spanish Dogs Mutilated

The Netherlands

England

Hundreds of racing Greyhounds and hunting Galgos in Spain have been fortunate to escape death and have been saved by various organizations in Spain. They are now awaiting adoption. Unfortunately, there are just not enough homes to go around in Spain for these dogs. Occasionally we have the opportunity to bring one or two here to the United States. These dogs become working ambassadors for their breeds to raise awareness and support for those who are still waiting. Through the efforts of many people, affordable transportation has been worked out for these lucky dogs. It costs only US$120 to transport a crate to Spain and pay the airfare of a Greyhound or Galgo to come to the USA. Can you help sponsor a dog to make the trip?

Here are some of the dogs that are waiting for a ride to the USA....
This is Mafi, a Galgo rescued by the group in Seville. She is cared for by Isabel. She was very thin and near death and pregnant when she was rescued. Now she has had her puppies, and they were all put to sleep when born. There just was no way to save them, and they would have become sick. And, there is simply no room. Mafi is very gentle and sweet.  Her eyes look into your soul.

Mafi came to the US with Anna Clements to attend the Dewey Beach gathering in October 2002. She is currently enjoying counter surfing in her new home in New Hampshire.

Nuria got her name from the woman we met at the pet food factory who donates food to Scooby -- She was very nice and cares very much about Scooby. Nuria is a real sweetheart!  When I walked by her kennel I would say, "where's my pretty girl" and she would come running out, smiling and looking to be pet.  When Mary Alice cleaned out the kennel, bending down to pick up p..., Nuria would get under her and wiggle to get scratched.  She is a very engaging girl, sweet and very loving. I told Fermin that I would love to have her as a pet if I didn't have three dogs. Nuria will make someone a wonderful companion. She is bigger than most of the female Galgos -- there is just more of her to love. Nuria loves to sun herself.       Linda P.

Pata is the brindle with the green coat holding up one leg. He was in the van the morning Mary Alice and I first went to the new refuge. Apparently he had been wandering the streets for many months, being fed by a Police Officer but unable to be caught. Eventually the same Police Officer who was feeding him was able to gain his trust to catch him and bring him to Scooby. Pata puts little weight on his foot; usually only uses his three good legs. He is very sweet, a little shy but loves to be pet and fussed over.  Mary Alice and I put the green coat on him his first night as it was cold - we also gave him a nice wool blanket to sleep on, he seemed very appreciative.  As you know when we took Liberty and Chance out of the kennel,  he cried and cried - Mary Alice and I could not go by his kennel again once we took the two out -  he just looked at us and howled - it was very sad. He deserves his own bed. Pata loves his ears and head rubbed.   Linda P.

How you can help....

It costs just US$120 to get a Galgo or Greyhound from Spain to the United States. Please consider donating whatever you can afford to help. Adoption groups that may not be on the East Coast or have room for a Galgo can donate as well. It's a great way to help these unfortunate dogs without taking one in or adopting. All donations through this page go directly to transportation costs of Spanish dogs. Clicking on the "Make a Donation" button will take you to Paypal.com where you can send money using your credit card or checking account. If you prefer, checks can be mailed to the address below.
