This international conference will focus on welfare/adoption issues concerning racing greyhounds, glagos, lurchers, and all the crosses in-between. One focus will be that greyhound racing has dwindled in the US (especially in New England) also in Spain, and is waning in the UK. Subsequently, there appears to be a trend of greyhound racing moving to countries without animal welfare regulations. Also there will be a review of other current wel-fare issues.
Fermin Perez, Founder and President of Scooby Refuge in Medina Del Campo, Spain www.Scoobymedina.com .
Anna Clements, SOS Galgos, www.sosgalgos.com, Barcelona, Spain
Marion Fitzgibbon, Chairperson, Limerick Animal Welfare, will not be able to attend - but she will be sending informaiton on the current state of the greyhound welfare and adoption efforts in Ireland. www.limerickanimalwelfare.com www.irishanimals.com
Jennifer Watkins, Chairperson for Greyhound Adoption, Shamrock Foundation Greyhound Placement, Louis-ville, Kentucy, will discuss her group's role in helping greyhounds and greyhound crosses in the Mid-West. www.greyhoundsofshamrock.org
Michele Scott will represent efforts to help greyhounds and greyhound crosses in Indiana.
Since greyhound racing has ended in New England greyhound advocates are most concerned with how greyhounds are faring during this time of change in Florida and the Mid-West. Since a major issue has long been the breeding of track greyhounds with hunting dogs in Spain we are planning to have the Spanish representatives discuss their experiences with this situation.
An overall question.......Who will be breeding greyhounds in the future? will also be discussed.
The conference was held at Greyhound Friends, Inc. 167 Saddle Hill Road, Hopkinton, MA 01748 and organized by its founder, Louise Coleman.
